Measles Prevention
Measles can be prevented, long before an anticipated exposure, through vaccination. A large rise in the number of cases of measles in the UK has been directly linked to a lack of vaccination. The following precautions at different stages of life will help to prevent measles:
- 9-15months of age: First dose of the triple MMR vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella. This is given as a single injection. Following vaccination, a transient fever and rash may develop in 5-15% of children.
- 3 years of age: A second (booster) dose is given.
- MMR is not to be administered during pregnancy.
